RESUMO

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess nursing students' compliance to standard precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2021 to June 2022, 816 nursing students participated in the study. A socio-demographic questionnaire and Compliance with Standard Precautions Scale were used to collect data. Means and percentages were used to report socio-demographic characteristics multiple regression analysis used to identify the factors influencing compliance with standard precautions. Results: The mean age of nursing students was 21.30 ± 1.31 years. The majority of nursing students were female, with 703 (86.2%) being female and 113 (13.8%) being male. Compliance among nursing students was 76.8% overall. Nursing students reported the highest compliance (97.7%) with putting used sharp articles into sharp boxes, with 97.1% compliance for covering mouth and nose when wearing a mask. Participants reported the lowest (38.6%) when it came to not recapping used needles after giving an injection. Regression analysis revealed that gender, year of study, and having needlestick injury or contact with blood/body fluids experience all influenced nursing students' compliance with standard precautions. Conclusions: During the pandemic, nursing students compliance to standard precautions was optimal, according to this study. More research should be done to assess nursing students' compliance with standard precautions and the effect of infection control strategies used to prevent COVID-19 transmission.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate whether attitudes towards sexuality acquired by students during a Spanish nursing degree are sufficient for their performance in professional practice. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative study based on a self-completion survey composed of standardized scales that compare sexual attitudes among 101 first-year students with 86 fourth-year students. The 187 nursing students, 24 men and 163 women were between 18 and 60 years old (M age=21.21, SD=5.48). The evaluative instrument was an anonymous questionnaire that consisted of sociodemographic questions and two standardized scales: Attitudes Towards Sexuality Scale (ATSS-28) and Double Standard Scale (DSS).Results: Comparison between cohorts using the Mann-Whitney U test proved to be close to being significant in the ATSS, U=3625.50, z=-1.95, p=.052 and significant in DSS, U=3560.50, z=-2.13, p=.034. These findings indicate that fourth-year students have more positive attitudes towards sexuality and less rigid adherence to gender roles. In addition, a medium negative correlation, r s =-.307, p=.001, between ATSS and DSS was obtained, showing a positive association between attitudes and less adherence to gender roles. These results suggest that nursing degree training had a positive impact on sexual attitudes. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals are centrally involved in the care of patients and families. Nurses' attitudes towards sexuality are important in terms of patient comfort and the accessibility and acceptability of care. Implementation of training in sexuality has a positive effect on nursing care and favours the establishment of global health strategies (AU)

BACKGROUND: Nursing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) enrollments are languishing, and little is known about PhD enrollment strategies that may lessen nursing's PhD shortage. PURPOSE: This study examined strategies for bolstering PhD enrollments or enrollment intentions among college students and graduates. METHODS: An integrative review was undertaken using Whittemore and Knafl's methodology and Garrard's Matrix Method. Nine databases were searched, and a hand search was conducted. FINDINGS: Strategies were predominantly situated in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Features of successful strategies contained core components of faculty mentoring, hands-on research, funding and compensation, undergraduate participation, summer timeframe, informational sessions, and social support. DISCUSSION: Less rigorous study designs and mostly STEM samples inhibit the transferability of these strategies to nursing. Qualitative research is needed to better understand nursing students' perspectives about the PhD. Additionally, current PhD enrollment strategies within nursing schools need to be systematically evaluated and the findings disseminated.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The nursing education system has evolved with an increased emphasis on student-centred education, such as implementing flipped classroom pedagogy. Given the promising positive educational outcomes, the trend of using flipped classroom pedagogy has become increasingly popular in undergraduate nursing education. However, little is known about how these flipped classroom methods impact on nursing educational practices in limited-resource settings situated in South Asia. OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of implementing flipped classroom pedagogy in undergraduate nursing education from the nursing students' perspective. METHODS: This mixed-methods study employed a quantitative survey and six focus group discussions conducted in three state universities in Sri Lanka. The Nursing Students' Readiness for Flipped Classroom (NSR-FC) questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data. The semi-structured focus group discussions were conducted by using 18 reflective and open-ended questions. Descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance methods were employed when analysing quantitative data. An inductive thematic analysis approach was used to summarize the focus group discussions. RESULTS: The questionnaire survey revealed that nursing students reported high levels of personal, technical, and pedagogical readiness across all three universities, while environmental readiness was perceived as low. The inductive thematic analysis identified three themes, namely: enablers, challenges, and benefits. Specifically, nursing students valued the student-centred approach. They were ready to utilize their own devices to overcome limited technological provision; however, a short training session about how to engage in the flipped classroom was desirable. Also, their exposure to basic educational technology was perceived as adequate and they were aware of the positive outcomes of flipped classroom pedagogy. CONCLUSION: Nursing students were ready to enrol in a flipped classroom programme. The provision of technological resources in the education environment was identified as a great challenge for flipped classroom implementation. Overall, the findings indicate there are promising feasibilities for the flipped classroom implementation.

RESUMO

Simulation may be an effective educational strategy for undergraduate nursing students to experience evidence-based practice. The aim of this scoping review is to explore such simulations to discover the design characteristics that best achieve this goal. In this review, we will consider studies in which the focus was on evidence-based practice-related simulation programs for undergraduate students in academic, clinical, or virtual settings. We will also focus on the active learning strategies applied in such simulation programs. This scoping review will be conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Studies will be searched in Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE; PubMed), the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), and the Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE). Sources of unpublished studies/gray literature will not be included in this scoping review. Data extraction will be undertaken by using a data-extraction tool developed by the reviewers, based on the National League for Nursing Jeffries Simulation Theory. Via a narrative summary and tabulated results, we will describe how the simulation programs were designed or implemented in an undergraduate curriculum.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe the development and use of a wound care simulation assessing RNs' and graduating student nurses' practical wound care competence and to describe observations of participants' wound care competence. METHODS: A descriptive, qualitative design was used. Data were collected in 2019 from 50 healthcare professionals and students using a simulated wound care situation and an imaginary patient case. The simulation was based on a previously developed and tested wound care competence assessment instrument, which included a 14-item checklist that assesses practical wound care competence of chronic wounds. The data were analyzed and described based on the 14 competence areas or as other competencies. RESULTS: Participants showed competence in identification of wound infection, debridement, dressing selection, tissue type identification, and consultation. Participants' shortcomings were related to pain assessment and management, asepsis, offloading, and documentation. Simulation was shown to be a promising tool to assess healthcare professionals' and students' practical wound care competence in a safe and standardized situation. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided new information about simulation as a method to assess student nurses' and RNs' wound care competence. The results could be used in wound care education planning and development in both undergraduate nursing education and continuing education for nursing professionals.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: There is limited knowledge about students' experiences with virtual simulation when using a video conferencing system. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how second-year undergraduate nursing students experienced learning through virtual simulations during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The study had an exploratory design with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In total, 69 nursing students participated in two sessions of virtual simulation during spring 2020, and 33 students answered online questionnaires at session 1. To further explore students' experiences, one focus group interview and one individual interview were conducted using a video conferencing system after session 2. In addition, system information on use during both sessions was collected. RESULTS: Changes in the students' ratings of their experiences of virtual simulation with the Body Interact™ system were statistically significant. The virtual simulation helped them to bridge gaps in both the teaching and learning processes. Four important aspects of learning were identified: 1) learning by self-training, 2) learning from the software (Body Interact™), 3) learning from peers, and 4) learning from faculty. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that virtual simulation through a video conferencing system can be useful for student learning and feedback from both peers and faculty is important.

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition that occurs in women and is associated with problems such as menstrual irregularities; hirsutism; obesity; insulin resistance; acne; and later life with diabetes mellitus and uterine cancer. The study aim was to assess phenotype characteristics and risk factors of polycystic ovarian syndrome among nursing students. Materials and Methods: Cross sectional study (descriptive) included a sample of 400 females from Faculty of Nursing, Zagazig University, Egypt. Were used for data collection; structured-interviewing questionnaire sheet, data related to anthropometric measures, risk factors about PCOS and observational check list about phenotype characteristics of PCO. Results: 6% of the studied student females had family history of PCO, nearly half of them had fast food, more than half of studied student females had hirsutism, more than one quarter had acne, (14.5%) had menstrual irregularity and one third of them had continuous abnormal weight gain. Also, this study showed that lack of awareness was found among majority of girls about PCOS. Discussion: Therefore, it could be concluded that, family history of PCOS, obesity and fast-food diet habits are found to be the predisposing factors for development of PCOS. The risk of PCOS increases with presence of one or more identified predisposing factors. Most of the factors tested as predisposing factors in our study are interlinked to each other and are mostly modifiable Although that PCOS is prevalent endocrine disorder, there was poor knowledge among student females in Faculty of Nursing Zagazig University. Conclusion: The study recommended screening program from ministry of health for early detection of predisposing factors of PCOS including the secondary school students and faculties students through educational programs and messages through the counseling, brochures, to increase students' awareness about PCOS symptoms. Further research on larger sample size to identify how the problem is risky and how to deal it. Including the problem in social media and healthy channels

RESUMO

Given an 8.3% decline in nursing PhD enrollments between 2013 and 2018 and persistent nursing faculty vacancies nationwide, training the next generation of PhD-prepared nurse faculty remains a priority for the nursing profession. High quality nursing PhD mentorship is linked to improved career development and student retention, yet the traditional faculty-student dyad often does not meet all student needs due to multiple factors including faculty time constraints. The purpose of this paper was to describe the initiation of a new, student-led constellation mentorship program that involves one-on-one peer mentorship and inter-cohort mentorship via "Partnerships for Development." We surveyed students on their experiences after initial program implementation. We summarize our experiences implementing the program, provide programmatic evaluation, and make recommendations for other nursing PhD programs interested in implementing a similar mentorship model. A constellation model may be an effective and sustainable model for mentorship, but further research is needed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the knowledge and attitudes of student nurses regarding evidence-based guidelines for preventing pressure injuries. METHODS: This study used a descriptive research design. The participants included second-, third-, and fourth-year nursing students completing their bachelor's degrees at a faculty of nursing in Turkey. Data collection forms consisted of a student nurse information form, the Pressure Ulcer Prevention Knowledge Assessment Instrument, and the Attitude Towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument. RESULTS: The overall mean score for knowledge was 49.9% (11.7/26). The highest scores for the instrument's subthemes were for nutrition (72%), and the lowest were for etiology and development (40.1%). The overall mean attitude score was 42.20 ± 2.40, although a statistically significant difference among grades was found (P < .001). The highest mean scores showed agreement among students that pressure injury prevention should be a priority (10.50 ± 1.43). A significant difference was found in the competence subscale according to the number of dressing changes observed and sense of competence in pressure injury care (P = .003). A weak but statistically significant positive relationship was found between knowledge and attitude scores (r = 0.158; 95% confidence interval, .040-.269; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that certain revisions are needed in the nursing curriculum to improve the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students toward the prevention and care of pressure injuries. More details should be covered in the classroom and laboratories through simulation or clinical practice for improved management of pressure injuries.
